February 2024 Newsletter
Dear sed-DNA enthusiasts,
Three years have passed since the formation of the Sediment Ancient DNA Society. We cannot believe how fast the time has gone. We have now reached 454 members, the number is still slowly growing every month. We are very happy to see how society has developed and keeps on developing, especially for early career scientists. Many collaborations have been established, which would only be possible with such an opening and welcoming community, we hope to keep doing this for many more years to come.
As usual, papers published and pre-prints in the previous month are listed below.
New papers
Youri Lammers et al., (2024) published "Multiplexing PCR allows the identification of within-species genetic diversity in ancient eDNA" in Molecular Ecology Resources.
Gianluca Grasso et al., (2024) published "Paleomicrobiology: Tracking the past microbial life from single species to entire microbial communities" in Microbial Biotechnology.
Taryn Johnson et al., (2024) published "Working Ethically with Ancient DNA from Composites in the United States" in Advances in Archaeological Practice.
Sara Harðardóttir et al., (2024) published "Millennial-scale variations in Arctic sea ice are recorded in sedimentary ancient DNA of the microalga Polarella glacialis" in Communications Earth & Environment.
Luca Nishimura et al., (2024) published "Metagenomic analyses of 7000 to 5500 years old coprolites excavated from the Torihama shell-mound site in the Japanese archipelago" in PLoS ONE.
Stella Z Buchwald et al., (2024) published "Plankton community changes during the last 124 000 years in the subarctic Bering Sea derived from sedimentary ancient DNA" in The ISME Journal.
Preprints
Xinlu Li</a> (2023) made the preprint "Biological Evolution Reflected from Sediment Ancient DNA by the High-throughput Sequencing" available at Authorea Preprints
New positions
Three-years research position with Dr Charline Giguet-Covex, at EDYTEM Laboratory (CNRS, Université Savoie Mont Blanc: in Le Bourget du Lac in FRANCE.)
Project Title: MAGIC2 “Mountain AGroecosystems past trajectories developed by different soCieties under different bioclimatic conditions”.
Tasks: Apply DNA metabarcoding and qPCR analyses on lake sediment samples from several lakes located in the western Alps between 370 and 2540 m asl, and collaborate with sedimentologists, palaeoenvironmentalists, historians and archaeologists to integrate different proxies and data-types on past socio-ecosystems. See here the full ad in French and English.
