March 2026 Newsletter

Summary

Dear sedaDNA enthusiasts,

Hello! Welcome to the March newsletter and Happy New Year of the Horse if you celebrate. This past month we have seen the publishing of three papers, one preprint and two Postdoc positions. As always, if you have a query or something to announce, please tell us using this form , and if you have a recent paper to share in the next newsletter, let us know by using this form.

Hope you have a joyful and productive month of March,

The organising board

New papers

Yi Wang et al., (2026) published "Prokaryotic assemblages recovered by sedimentary DNA record natural and human-driven disturbances over the past 13 500 years in a cultural landscape" in The ISME Journal.

Giulia Zampirolo et al., (2026) published "Ancient DNA reconstruction of Late Holocene ecosystems within the Carpathian Basin from paleo-meanders and archaeological deposits" in Nature Scientific Reports.

Lawrence Guy Straus et al., (2026) published "A Window into 40,000 Years of the Prehistory of Iberia: The Long Excavation of El Mirón Cave, Cantabrian Spain" in Journal of Anthropological Research.

Preprints

Pnina Cohen et al., (2026) submitted the preprint "Evaluating the applicability of kinship analyses for sedimentary ancient DNA datasets" available on BioRXiv.

New Positions

The section of Molecular Ecology and Evolution at the Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen, invites applications for a 1.5 year postdoctoral position in ancient environmental multiomics, starting 1 May 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you'll work at the cutting edge of ancient environmental genomics and human evolutionary biology, analyzing multi-omic datasets from Neanderthal and early modern human coprolites and faecal-rich sediments. You will apply computational and statistical approaches to reconstruct ancient environments and gut microbiomes, characterize host-microbe interactions, and test how these communities responded to dietary shifts and environmental pressures during the critical period of Neanderthal-AMH transition in Westernmost Europe.

Deadline for applications: 5 March, 23.59pm CET. If you'd like more information, please contact Ainara Sistiaga or Mikkel Winther Pedersen.

Lincoln University is advertising a two-year fixed postdoctoral position supporting research through eDNA/eRNA analysis on impactful freshwater science projects.

The Postdoc blends hands-on laboratory work, bioinformatic analysis, academic writing, and meaningful collaboration with students, researchers, iwi, and partner organisations. You’ll contribute to research that supports sustainable freshwater management and innovative applications of eDNA in Aotearoa.

Deadline for applications: 09 Mar 2026 18:00 NZST. If you'd like more information, please contact Susie Wood.
